Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has demanded a written apology from Kiambu residents who demonstrated on Monday against what they termed ‘inflammatory and abusive remarks’ the lawmaker directed at President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Protests broke out in Kiambu County’s Githunguri, Limuru, Githurai, Ruiru and Gatundu areas as residents called for the arrest of Babu for allegedly insulting Uhuru.
Babu was arrested on Monday evening by CID officers and spent the night at Pangani Police Station as he waited to be taken to the Milimani Law Courts to answer to incitement charges.
This followed remarks he made on Sunday in Kawangware when NASA leaders campaigned in Dagoretti North constituency where he likened African leaders to puppies. He also made remarks deemed disrespectful to the person of the president and the presidency.
“I demand a written apology from all those who unlawfully demonstrated against me falsely,” Babu said on Tuesday shortly before he was arraigned in court.
“I owe nobody an apology.”
Earlier Monday, Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria vowed to ensure Babu is arrested and prosecuted over remarks he made in Kawangware.
Protesters in Kiambu burnt Babu’s effigies as they chanted anti-NASA slogans. They blocked roads causing a huge traffic jam along the busy Thika Super Highway.
