Embakasi East MP elect Babu Owino has said he will not stop drinking the illegal brew chang'aa.

Owino said that the illicit brew was a source of finance that funded his education and his family's upkeep.

"I grew up in Nyalenda slums in Kisumu county. My mother used to brew and sell chang'aa. Times were hard and the police would often go into people's homes and beat them up. I saw my mother being whipped and I slept at Kisumu central police station several times because of selling the illicit brew," said the ODM MP.

"We struggled to do much but that was the only means that I could see to raise fees for my education. That was until I won a scholarship that gave me a chance to do my A levels and proceed to university. I still drink chang'aa up to now because that is where I came from. It was not a bed of roses," he added.

Owino is a former University of Nairobi student leader.

It is believed that he intends to vie for Nairobi county governor in 2022 and presidency in 2027.
