A three-week-old baby died on Wednesday morning after being abandoned in an incubator at Malindi sub county hospital.
Malindi sub county medical superintendent Dr Ajawi said the death occurred due to confusion of transferring the baby.
“The baby (Victoria Tunda) died because of exposure to cold. She weighed 1.2kg. We had only two nurses who could not attend to her full time. Her condition required that she get full attention 24 hours,” he said.
Medics reportedly told the mother to take her to Malindi Tawfiq Hospital, a private facility.
They then removed the lifesaving machines and joined their colleagues in the strike, according to the Star.
The mother of the baby was required to pay Sh11, 000 per day at the private hospital, which she couldn't afford.
The baby died at the Tawfiq Hospital, where she had been taken after the county government of Mombasa agreed to pay the money.
