Samantha Pendo’s mother with her daughter at Aga Khan hospital, Kisumu before she succumbed to her injuries on Tuesday this week. [ghafla.co.ke]Since news broke of how 6-month old baby Samantha Pendo from Kisumu was savagely clobbered by police leading to her death few days ago, calls for justice to be done to the innocent soul have been getting louder by day.Whether this sustained pressure by Kenyans from all walks of life will trigger the relevant authorities to act fast and deliver this much needed justice, is a different thing altogether. But why, perhaps, this justice should not be delayed a day further, is the painful reflection by her family of the circumstances under which Pendo was born. Before Pendo was born, her mother Lancer Achieng had experienced two consecutive miscarriages according to the Nation."Their attempts at having children were frustrated twice when Achieng experienced one miscarriage after another. Six months ago, however, everything changed. Achieng, 29, walked into the Star Hospital in Kisumu as an expectant woman and on February 8, walked out as a happy and proud new mother, cradling her new born daughter in her arms. At last her dream of becoming a mother had come true," the Saturday Nation reports. The paper writes that Achieng and her husband called their daughter Samantha Pendo because they believed God had showed Achieng love and mercy after she went through a difficult delivery. However, the name Pendo has come to represent pain, tears, sorrow and anguish, not just for Pendo’s parents but for the country too.The baby was clobbered by police officers on the night of Friday, August 11, soon after President Uhuru Kenyatta was declared winner. The infant was admitted at Agha Khan Hospital for treatment but slipped into a coma for four days. She finally died on Tuesday evening this week.A post-mortem carried out two days later revealed that Pendo had suffered a cracked scalp and that she had deep injuries.
