Speaking to this writer Education Supplements International (ESI) manager Raphael Mwangi said Adult Education Programme was part of the recently initiated Elderly People Homes Project by the humanitarian oriented European nations funded organisation.

Mwangi said the aim of the programme was to provide an opportunity for adults to enjoy the privileges that come with basic education.

According to a survey conducted in Nakuru majority of semi-illiterate adults in the area were willing to go back to class to improve their reading and arithmetic skills.

“Most of our respondents in the survey indicated that they were denied education opportunities when they were young due to poverty and negligence by their parents,” not ed Mwangi.

Annah Wanjiru Kamau,57, who was among those who came to register for the programme said she dropped out of school in standard four after she got pregnant.

“My parents forced me to marry after I got pregnant. I had dreams of becoming a teacher,” said Wanjiru.

For now Wanjiru want to go back to class so that she can be in a position to understand English. “I would like to be following what is happening in the country by reading newspapers,” noted Wanjiru.
