Farmers in Bahati are being encouraged to venture into fish farming to boost income and food security in the area.
This was observed on Monday by Nakuru County Agricultural Commissioner Zablon Kamau when he addressed potential and regular fish farmers at Bahati Agricultural extension demonstration farm, during a Farmers’ Open Training Forum.
The agriculture commissioner noted that the government was keen on assisting farmers develop and venture into fish farming because the sector had a big potential in turning around farmers and the county’s economic fortunes.
He noted that the government had already embarked on free training and subsidized fingerling distribution to farmers alongside financing across the country, and encouraged farmers in Bahati to take advantage of the incentives by venturing into fish farming.
“Fish farming is the future of farming in our country as a new agricultural culture. We should be keen and observe that the government is serous on this policy and take advantage of the current incentives being offered by the government,” he said.
“It is cost effective to venture into fish farming because it requires little capital and also it entails less stressful management efforts yet the returns are enormous,” noted Kamau.
The agriculture commissioner told the farmers to seek for more information and training in fish farming from the local agricultural offices and research institutions.
