The County government of Nakuru has opened one of the proposed seven temporary garbage collection and recycling dumpsites which will ease pressure on the main Gioto dumpsite in Nakuru town.
Speaking when he opened the Bahati waste collection point on Tuesday, County director of environment Kiogora Muriithi said that the collection points will help in sorting and recycling of waste before being taken to the main dumpsite.
Kiogora said that the Gioto dumpsite is already full and the only way to avert a health disaster is by opening temporary dumpsites in sub-counties.
“Nakuru has one major dumpsite which has been in existence for the past 50 years and the site if full beyond its capacity. The new temporary dumpsites will help us in recycling and sorting the waste before deciding what can be taken to the main dump site,” said Kiogora.
Kiogora said that they have allocated more than Sh 300 million which will be used in setting up the temporary dumpsites in Molo, Gilgil, Mau-Narok, Njoro, Subukia and Bahati.
“The money for this project is already available and what we are looking for is the space to set up the site,” he said.
He said that apart from keeping the environment clean the project will also help in creating jobs for unemployed youths.
“We will employ people to work on these sites and this will be an employment which will see them get paid on a weekly basis,” he said.
