Bahati Member of Parliament Kimani Ngunjiri has accused former Education Cabinet Secretary Jacob Kaimenyi of trying to kill the education sector by banning school ranking.
Kimani said that the current Lands CS was hindering development of the country's education sector when he denied schools a chance to compete against each other.
The lawmaker was speaking to this writer on Sunday in responce to the passing of the Kenya National Examination Council Amendment Bill 2016 which allows ranking of schools in national examinations.
Kimani termed the bill as ripe because it will lead to growth of the education sector.
"I am one of the people who supports new changes in the education sector and I must say the KNEC amendment Bill 2016 has come at the right time since school ranking will help gauge our students and ensure quality. Kaimenyi when he was the minster tried to kill the sector by banning school ranking," said Ngunjiri.
The Bahati legislator also noted that the current system is so competitive hence there is need for ranking in schools to ensure that the children get quality education.
However, Kimani condemned those who insist that the education sector should focus on success through examination saying there is need for the system to focus more on the skills that will empower the society and the country's economy at large.
"I do not believe in students getting A's but I am intrested to see students get empowered with technical skills that will help them in building the the society," said Ngunjiri.
He also called on parents to shun exerting pressure on students when it comes to performance adding that there is a better way of engaging the students in the present society.
