Bahati MP Kimani Ngunjiri has asked the Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (Cord) to quit calling for a referendum and instead direct its energies on development. Ngunjiri challenged the coalition to recall all its elected leaders under in the country. He said a referendum will be a waste of time and resources, accusing Opposition leader Raila Odinga of contradicting himself. “Why is he calling for referendum to rectify the constitution yet he enjoyed the same under the coalition government?” he wondered. Speaking to journalists at Menengai, the legislator advised the coalition’s members to wait for the next general election. “I support Deputy President William Ruto in his observation that we cannot be in two elections within each five-year term,” said Ngunjiri, adding that the people around the former prime minister were not giving him the right advice. Ngunjiri was supported by Kiamaina ward representative Samuel Kamau, who urged the youths to ignore the referendum call and instead focus on self-development, which in turn will shape up their lives. “I urged the youths not even to attend their rallies, we are in government and we seek development not problems,” he said. The MCA took a swipe at the Orange Democratic Movement, a member of the coalition, for ‘being hypocritical’. “How can they call for national referendum elections yet they failed to manage their party elections?” Kamau questioned.
