School girls in Primary Schools in Bahati Sub-county will start benefiting from free sanitary towels courtesy of a Non-Governmental Organization in collaboration with local women groups.
Announcing this on Thursday during the launch of the programme at Workers Primary School, Dr. Beatrice Waiyaki, the Nakuru region director of Pamoja Initiative that spearheads campaigns against girl child education and welfare, said the programme will last for as long as it gets support from stakeholders.
The girl child welfare activist, while urging other community based organizations to come up with more community welfare initiatives dedicated at elevating the lives of the girl child, said the programme will benefit over five thousand girls in semi-urban and rural areas schools in Bahati and Subukia.
“I take this opportunity to congratulate the various women groups of this area who came together to initiate this programme. It is a good gesture from women groups who best understand the challenges their young school girls undergo, and I urge other groups to come up and support this programme and others that are driven towards elevating the lives of our girlsf,” said Waiyaki.
She noted that many school girls fail to go to school during their monthly menstruation, a fact that leads to drop outs and poor performances.
The Chairperson of Bahati Women Groups Association, Gladys Gicheha observed that there was need for local women groups and other stake holders to take an active role in nurturing and creating awareness on myriad problems related to gender imbalances among school girls to inspire them.
