Kenyans have been urged to embrace domestic tourism in order to boost the sector and build the country's economy.Tourism Cabinet Secretary Najib Balala said the sector heavily relies on international tourists, adding that domestic tourism will help the country earn more revenue as the sector was a key economic driver."That is the more reason why we need to work on making it more attractive and make it sustainable," he said.The CS was speaking on Saturday on the sidelines of the Council of Governors (CoG) induction at Diani Reef Beach Resort in Kwale County.This comes as hoteliers in Mombasa acknowledge that their facilities have been registering a rise in the number of visitors.Sarova Whitesands Beach Resort general manager Siddharth Sathe said the hotel was enjoying brisk business, owing to visitors from Nairobi and upcountry."Domestic tourism has uplifted the guest numbers. Our hotel has 90 percent occupancy, mainly by local holidaymakers," said Sathe, as quoted by the Nation.On his part, Sun Africa Hotels Chief Executive Mohammed Hersi said for the past three years, the region has been depending on domestic tourists from Nairobi."After a long electioneering period, Kenyans are coming to the Coast in droves for relaxation," he noted.
