Balambala MP and aspirant Abdi Omar Shurie has urged the various humanitarian agencies operating in the county to act speedily to help the flood-stricken families in the constituency.
Speaking after visiting the affected families in the region, Shurie said the floods were now a disaster that needed immediate action to help the residents.
“The farmers' efforts have again gone to waste. Previously it was the devastating drought and now floods. Al in all we appreciate the speedy responses by the government's disaster management agency but they also need to do more in such times as this when expect more rains,” Shurie stated.“At the moment we have a lot of families who have been badly hit by the floods and I would urge the disaster teams to visit the affected areas to assess the damages with the aim of assisting all the affected households well before another disaster strikes,” added the MP.
Amid the crisis, the residents say they are happy with the government's response.
On Saturday, a military chopper on rescue mission was seen in Sankuri division where 14 family members who had been marooned by flood waters were rescued at Hadley area.
