Bamburi Cement has asked Kenya National Highways Authority (KENHA) to redesign the Nairobi - Namanga interchange at Athi River to reduce road accidents in the area.
Addressing members of the press in Athi River town on Saturday, Bamburi Cement Company Limited's Logistics and Safety Coordinator Mr Zachary Masinza said the interchange was poorly designed resulting in increased road accidents in the region.
"There is a design problem on the interchange since there is no provision for vehicles turning to Bamburi Cement Company hence the high rate of accidents," said Masinza.
Masinza said the interchange was designed in a manner that it forces vehicles, including large trucks, getting into the company from Mombasa Road to go up to main entrance of the East African Portland Cement Company to gain entry.
He said some of the motorists have many times attempted to make U turns at the point leading to several tragic road accidents.
The officer said the company's employees, drivers and clients were the most vulnerable hence the need for KENHA's intervention before more lives are lost.
Masinza, however, called on motorists, including boda boda operators and pedestrians using the interchange to be more careful and cautious to reduce accidents.
