The rampant cases of women battering in Kitutu Masaba can be combated if women formed groups that could help them get empowered economically, an economic expert has said.

Speaking on Thursday at Mochenwa at a workshop organised by Gesima Ward MCA Ken Atuti, Gladys Gathoni, a manager at Bank of Africa said women were to blame for battering cases against them since most of them were entirely dependent on their men.

She said women groups will not only allow them to share social ideas but also enable them become independent by opening small businesses.

“As African women, we have refused to think outside the box yet we have an enormous opportunity,"she said.

"Men have been taking advantage of our economic status to bully and decide for us. We have to join groups and get empowered by opening small businesses to sustain our livelihoods."

Ms Gathoni lamented that while the world of feminism was increasingly gathering momentum in Africa, Kenyan women were reluctant to seize the opportunity and stamp their authority in the economy of the nation.

“If at all we want to fight discrimination and persistent cases of battering against us, we must seize the available opportunities and works towards achieving goals that can enable us have a say in the society. We must be financially stable and there is no short cut,” added Gathoni.

MCA Atuti donated Sh100,000 to Mochenwa women group towards buying plastic chairs for hire during the event.
