A bar owner was on Friday fined Sh100,000 or face eight month in jail for operating outside the stipulated hours according to the Alcohol and Drugs Control law.
According to the charge sheet, Aineah Mwaura who runs Ngondu Bar in Njoro Sub-county near Egerton University was arrested at 1pm on November 15 this by police on patrol, selling alcohol against the law and resisted arrest by adamantly refusing to open the door of the bar building, forcing police to use force to gain entry into the building.
The presiding magistrate Patrick Mwaniki, who snapped the heavy charge to be a warning to other arrogant law-breaking alcohol sellers said the accused would be able to raise the fine amount, because while being arrested he had claimed that he would rather use a lot of money to find his way out of jail but not little money to bribe the police.
The court had heard that police had used extra means to gain entry into the bar before arresting the accused who was selling alcohol to a few patrons who were also arrested.
The accused amused the court when he obliged to raise the money to pay the fine and promised to abandon the alcohol selling business.
