Kiambu Governor William Kabogo has warned bar owners following an outcry from the public of deaths occasioned by sale of illicit brews, use of bhang and breach of ‘Mututho Laws’ by the joints. The governor, while leading destruction of 2000 litres of chang’aa in Makongeni town, asked youths to engage in meaningful ventures. The program supervisor, Dominic Gicheru, warned youths against engaging in vices that are unlawful “Youths must learn to say no to drugs, but instead engage themselves in activities that are helpful to the nation,” said Gicheru. Bhang worth Sh 500,000 was destroyed in the event and 150 litres of kangara destroyed. Twenty people who among them are bar maids, owners and drunkards were apprehended in the afternoon swoop that attracted huge numbers of residents who also condemned use of drugs. Many bar licenses were also revoked in the process and bars closed. Estimated 20,000 youths engage in drug usage daily which reduce them to meaningless people in Kiambu County, as expressed by the program leader. “Measures have been put in place to carry on destroying and arresting not only the drug users but also sellers and bar owners in Kiambu County at large,” said Gicheru.
