Parents, teachers and students of Kysila Primary School in Machakos County have threatened to demolish bars and pubs operating near the primary school.

The angry parents held peaceful protests on Saturday asking the county government to close down the bars.

The parents who marched to the deputy commissioner’s office said that the presence of bars and pubs near schools has affected learning.

The parents claimed that the bars sell alcoholic drinks to students and also play loud music.

Led by the school chairman Fidelis Kioko, the parents petitioned the county government to close the bars immediately.

“We are tired of complaining and now it is time to take action. The bars operating near our school must be closed down,” said Kioko.

Kioko said that students are being lured to indulge in alcohol by the bar operators. He added that the number of students missing school because of alcohol influence is high.

Speaking to the parents, deputy commissioner Geroge Onyango said action will be taken immediately.

“We are going to close down all bars operating near schools and hospitals,” he said.

The deputy commissioner said that the local administrators have been directed to list down all bars operating near schools.

He also said that a crackdown on rogue bar operators will be done soon.
