Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Thika branch Chairman Joe Mungai has urged the government to stop threatening teachers who have refused to resume their duties in North Eastern Kenya.
Speaking in his Thika office on Friday, Mungai has told the government to focus on heightening security in the region to ensure that its workers are safe.
The union leader asserts that, it is right of each and every Kenyan to work in safe environment.
“It is true that teachers have a contract with the government, which states that as a government employee you are supposed to work in any part of Kenya, but there is no way one can go to work in an insecure area,” observed Mungai.
"Life has no spare; you lose it that is all. If I had a relative working there I would urge them to consider their lives first,” said Mungai.
However, Mungai said that they regret the fact that students in North Eastern are not given their right to education as at the moment, but he maintained that the situation is beyond teachers.
"We are sympathetic of the pupils but the government is to blame for the stand-off. Once the teachers are assured of their security, they will resume duty in North Eastern,” said Mungai.
