A young man who on Friday admitted before a Nyahururu court to stealing beer at a police canteen has been sentenced to community service.

The accused, Noar Magonge from Subukia appeared before Resident magistrate Peter Muholi who convicted him to a non-custodial sentence of one year.

Magonge is said to have committed the offence on January 4, 2015 where he stole three bottles of beers and two sodas valued at Sh800 belonging to a police canteen.

The prosecution said on the material day at around 9pm, Peris Adhiambo who operates the canteen was busy in the canteen kitchen when she saw the 22-year-old leaving with the said bottles.

She raised the alarm and he was arrested.

The accused was later arraigned in court where he pleaded guilty.

The court heard that the accused was under the influence of alcohol and since he had no money, the desire to drink more alcohol forced him to steal.
