The news on the Senator'smother was first broken on social media on Wednesday morning by his Elgeyo Marakwet counterpart Kipchumba Murokomen.

Cheruiyot also took to social media to write a message to his late mum, who until her death was a teacher and an active member of the Kipsigis Teachers Sacco.

"Thank you God for the 30 fantastic years you allowed mum and I to share on this side of eternity. She knew you and loved you passionately, I am comforted in knowing that if I too guard my faith, I will see her again at our proper home when the time comes. You fought a good fight, gave us the best and prepared us to face this day when it comes. It has finally come and your words ring true. We last spoke on 14th of April 2016, just two days before the journey of a painful nine months for you began. How I missed hearing your affirmation , rebuke, jokes and all that we shared in this life. Many are the times, when my phone rang , I secretly wished it was you calling despite knowing full well that you were unable to. It's still fine with me knowing you won't call again, but am comforted in knowing you will do something better. You will watch over me, cheer me with the angels and intercede for me. I will not let you down by deserting the ways of the lord that you so diligently imparted in me. It is well with my soul. God's grace is enough for me. Rest In Peace Mum till we meet again," the Senator posted on his official Facebook account.

The emotional message resulted in encouraging words from his colleagues and supporters who responded with kind words.
