NASA co-principal and Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has proven once again that he cannot be trusted.
Speaking on Tuesday after a Wiper Party women leader’s league conference meeting in Athi River, Musyoka dismissed reports that he will be sworn in as the Deputy People's President at the end of February.
Going against the grain in the coalition, Kalonzo who was supposed to be sworn in alongside Raila Odinga says that the 'oathing' exercise is against the law.Despite speaking a few days after the anti-climax event at Uhuru Park in January, Kalonzo had fired up his supporters by promising them that he would be sworn in to help push their agenda.
But the master of doublespeak seems to continue with his oscillation after he told journalists on Tuesday that, “Don’t be misled by being told that Kalonzo is a coward. I am strong enough to make a decision that will benefit all our supporters.”
It seems like ODM’s Raila Odinga will be the only one remaining standing in the debacle since the other principals-just like Kalonzo- seem to have deserted the man hailed as Kenya’s father of democracy.
On January 30, Kalonzo, Musalia Mudavadi and Moses Wetangula went missing from the occasion which was attended by thousands at Uhuru Park.
Tuesday’s revelation by Kalonzo that swearing himself in would be against the law shows that he never was for the idea which has been advanced by the opposition to the extent of creating a resistance movement leaving it a largely one tribe affair.
During the much-hyped ceremony, the absence of the three leaders was a big surprise raising eyebrows among NASA supporters and other observers.
The supporters even demanded an explanation from Raila during the oath-taking ceremony to which a jaded leader said, “Kalonzo Musyoka is not here with us. But he is together with us in this. He will be sworn in later. You will hear more from us,” he explained.
And with the arrest and deportation of Miguna Miguna, could Kalonzo be rethinking the plan or has he been mellowed by forces beyond his control?
Shortly after the Uhuru Park charade, the trio who could not stand with Raila issued a statement saying: “We agreed to meet again this morning. However, due to circumstances beyond our comprehension and control, the four of us did not assemble as planned. Nonetheless, the NASA Summit remains strong and united,” the statement said.
Could these circumstances be the reason Kalonzo is having a change of mind? Only time will tell.
