Bett said the system is likely to give rich but unpopular aspirants room to buy the party's tickets.

He instead appealed to the Jubilee leadership to reconsider using the cards during primaries scheduled for April.

"There is a risk of unpopular but rich aspirants buying the smart cards in bulk and distributing them to their supporters or their strongholds so as to win nominations unfairly," said Bett.

He added: “I am advising my party leaders to change the strategy and shelve the plans to use the cards in a bid to guard against bitter political fallout within Jubilee party.”

The former ODM politician has also declared interest in Kericho Senate seat, currently held by Aaron Cheruiyot.

Former National Housing Corporation chairman Sammy Chepkwony will also be bidding to unseat the first time Senator.

The three faced off in the Kericho by-election on March 7, 2016.

The seat was declared vacant after the then Kericho senator Charles Keter was appointed Energy Cabinet Secretary (CS).
