As the gambling craze seems to be consuming much of the attention of Kenyans, Gem MP whose effort to regulate the betting industry flopped at the floor of the National Assembly a week ago says that the current gambling situation in the country will ruin the economy if not checked with tight regulations.
Midiwo revealed that he has learnt of people who make over 200 million through gambling, something that risks the stability of the nation because such people can do any mischief with the money.
"The state should be worried since that person can overthrow the government," he said.
"We are not trying to put them our of business. Slot machines around the country should be declared illegal by executive order," he added.
The Gem MP further said that the betting industry puts at risk the lives of people who have become addicted to it, the craze could lead to people committing suicide hence breaking the family structure.
He also said that the trend would lead to laziness among people who would stop farming to sit around and wait to win money on the phone.
"Why go into poultry farming when you get money on your phone without working hard? In Nyeri when a mama mboga sells their wares, you find them gambling in slotting machines. Is this not hurting the economy?" he added.
