Sports betting operator Betway Kenya has presented a cheque of Sh1 million to the First Lady of Kenya, Margaret Kenyatta at State House in support of the Kenya Drought Operation, an initiative championed by the Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS).
Handing over the donation at Statehouse, Betway Country Manager Wanja Gikonyo noted that the impact of the drought had been felt across the nation – affecting individuals, businesses and the country at large.
The Betway donation therefore formed part of a pledge to support the humanitarian and relief efforts for those affected people, especially women and children.
“As Betway Kenya, we felt it was necessary to step out and show support to our fellow Kenyans. I believe our timely support will provide relief to the most vulnerable drought victims such as the elderly and all those people facing hunger,” she said.
The donation will focus on interventions to mitigate drought, including nutrition, direct cash transfers, food vouchers, and rehabilitation of key communal watering points among other needs to the affected people.
KRCS issued a Drought Appeal in January this year that previously sought Sh1 billion to support 340,786 people which has since been revised to Sh2.5 billion to cater for 1 million people across 13 counties, in light of the dramatic increase in the number of people now in need of food assistance.
