Kisumu residents have been warned against a cholera outbreak in the region.
Kisumu’s Port Florence Hospital Medical Officer Polycarp Koyanda warned against the outbreak of the disease saying that most parents are losing their young children to cholera.
Speaking during a Kisumu Medical Forum held at Kisumu Hotel on Sunday, Koyanda urged the residents to ensure that they take the necessary steps to ensure that prevention measures are taken against the outbreak.
“Last week, there was a cholera outbreak in Migori and Homabay counties and that is why there is need for the neighbouring Kisumu County to ensure that preventive measures are taken against the illness.
We risk losing our young children, especially those below 10 years to cholera and parents really need to be careful with what their young children touch, eat or drink,” said Koyanda.
Kisumu Medical and Education Trust (KMET) Director Peter Apamo also asked the County Executive for Health Dr Elizabeth Ogaje to put in place the necessary measures to ensure that the outbreak is not widespread in the county.
Apamo, who was also present during the seminar, said that schools need to ensure that drinking water is well treated to prevent cases of cholera infection in the school going children.
