The programme is meant to improve maternal and child health outcomes in the country.

This was revealed by Kisumu County Governor wife, Olivia Ranguma, who said that the first lady is expected to launch the initiative at Otieno Oyoo High School in the outskirts of Kisumu city.

Olivia said the clinic will serve residents of Kisumu County and aims to accelerate the implementation of the national plan towards the elimination of new HIV infections among children.

She called upon residents to turn up in large numbers and welcome her.

“I am appealing to residents to join me in welcoming the first who has brought up goodies for our mothers,” said Ranguma.

Nyando sub county medical officer Dr Rosemary Obara said maternal deaths in the county are high and the first Lady’s initiative will reduce the worrying trend.

Obara said Kisumu County is among the 15 counties in the country that contribute to the 98 percent of the maternal deaths in the country.

Fifteen women die every day due to pregnancy related complications in the country and 20 percent of all deaths among mothers in the country are AIDS-related.

The “Beyond Zero Campaign” is part of the initiatives outlined in the strategic framework for the engagement of the First Lady in HIV control and promotion of maternal, newborn and child health in the country.
