A man was on Thursday arraigned before an Eldoret Court to answer to charges of being in possession of bhang. The accused, Edward Luchebe however surprised the court when he admitted to being in possession of the illegal substance and said he is a weed smoker as it helps him do his job well.Prosecution told the court that the accused was arrested with one stone of bhang valued at Sh1000 in Wareng, Uasin Gishu County on January 20, this year.Appearing before Eldoret Chief Magistrate Charles Obulutsa, Luchebe told the court that he has been a weed smoker since he was seventeen years and that he requires bhang to do his job of sinking boreholes and crashing stones for sale.He noted that bhang offers proteins to the body and makes him more productive in his work. He further explained that he cannot do his job without taking several puffs adding that he has never offended anyone after smoking weed. The accused told the magistrate that he is not a dealer but just a smoker and questioned why the police failed to present the bhang before the court. He claimed that the police might have impounded less than one stone which they alledge he had in his possession at the time of his arrest. The Magistrate however said many suspects facing similar charges always say that the drug helps them work well.He said the accused failed to provide any biological explanation to show the protein content in bhang adding that it is illegal to smoke it in the country. The accused did not take plea and Obulutsa directed the police to present the exhibit in court before the suspect is charged. To be the first to get updates on breaking and trending news in Kenya, send your WhatsApp number to 074094990.
