Bidco, the Thika-based edible fats company, has announced an ambitious plan to construct a solar-powered plant in a bid to cut its energy consumption costs.
In a statement released to the media on Thursday, Bidco CEO Vimal Shah said that the 1.2 MW solar project will kick off next month and take a period of six months to complete.
He has, however, not revealed the cost of the project but has said that it will save the edible oils, fats and detergents company millions of shillings. It will involve installing 3,920 solar panels on Bidco buildings' rooftops.
"We have plenty of rooftop space available and this project can put our energy situation in our own hands, at an affordable price which is a fantastic position to be in," the statement read.
The project is also expected to cut down the company's carbon emission as currently 70% of Bidco's energy needs come from sawdust, macadamia husks and agricultural wastes.
"The 1.2 Megawatt-Peak (MWP) capacity project will generate over 1.8 kilowatts hours (Kwh) and deliver power at half the grid cost saving Bidco about Sh650 million over its 25-year life cycle,"Vimal added.
