Bidders during port auction. [photo/the-star.co.ke]Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has embarked on a revenue recovery process through the annual public auction of uncollected imports at the Mombasa Port after the expiry of 30 days amnesty.
Numerous imports destined for Kampala, Uganda is among goods worth millions of shillings at KRA’s customs warehouse which were auctioned yesterday during the first phase of public auction for evading customs duty tax and clearance.
A used 2005 Toyota Premio destined for Kampala was sold at Sh550,000.The car imported under the consignee name of Dan Kabangoza a Ugandan arrived in July 2012 through the Grand Grace shipping company.
Also imported in 2012 under the same consignee is a used 2007 Toyota Corolla Fielder which was sold at Sh660,000. Other items sold were a 20-ft container of 231 packages traveling trolley bags selling at Sh1.7 million also destined for Salute Holdings Company in Uganda.
A 20-ft container of 90 packages of Washing Machines bought by Speke Hotel in Kampala, Uganda was also auctioned at a price of Sh1.5 million. Among the goods which were auctioned include 430 packages of surgical gloves imported by National Medical Stores of Entebbe, Uganda – a statutory body that procures, stores and distributes medicines, medical supplies, and vaccines to public health facilities.
The subsequent stage, which will majorly include second-hand motor vehicles, will be conducted on January 17 at the warehouse located in Mombasa Port.
