The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has introduced new measures as the auction of unclaimed goods at the Port of Mombasa starts.
KRA Manager in charge of Port Operations Mr Joseph Kaguru issued a stern warning to bidders who fail to pay for goods they have booked at the port auction.
Mr Kaguru said such bidders will be blacklisted from subsequent sales to ensure only genuine bidders are involved in the process.
Speaking during the auction at the Mombasa port’s Kilindini customs warehouse on Tuesday, Mr Kaguru said the authority has put in place enough measures to ensure the process is transparent.
“The fake bidders are the ones who make people think that officers are involved in the auction cut deals. We will not allow traders who bid but fail to pay for the goods to be allowed in the future sales,” said Kaguru.
“We will register the bidders so that they are properly identified. This is among the new rules and changes we have put in place to ensure the process is transparent,” added Mr Kaguru.
The manager said that some of the conditions of sale at the auction include a non-refundable deposit of 25 per cent of purchase money which is to be paid at the fall of the hammer with the balance paid by guaranteed or bankers cheque within 48 hours after sale.
