[Photo: Reuters]The Assumption of Office Committee which is mandated with preparing for the swearing in of Kenya's President-elect has once again embarked on its work less than a week after President Uhuru was declared the winner of the repeat poll. The committee chaired by Secretary to the Cabinet Joseph Kinyua had almost finished all the preparations after Uhuru was declared the winner of the August 8 general election, but was forced to shelve the plans when the Supreme Court nullified Uhuru’s victory on September 1."So far no petition has been filed in the Supreme Court, which has prompted the committee to proceed with the preparations. The committee is working on the logistical plans and the guests to be invited," an official at the Office of the President told the Star on Thursday.According to the Constitution, if there will be no petition filed at the Supreme Court within seven days challenging Uhuru’s Monday win, he will be sworn in on November 14.But in case a petition is filed and the outcome upholds the victory, then the swearing in will take place on the seventh day following the day the court rendered the decision. Before Uhuru's August 8 victory was nullified, the Standard, citing a member of the committee, had reported that leaders who were likely to be invited for Uhuru's swearing-in included, African Heads of State, among them, Paul Kagame (Rwanda), Yoweri Museveni (Uganda), John Pombe Magufuli (Tanzania), Jacob Zuma (South Africa), Nigeria’s Muhammadu Buhari and European leaders German Chancellor Angela Merkel and United Kingdom Prime Minister Theresa May.Also on the list were Liberian leader Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, businessman Aliko Dangote, His Highness the Aga Khan, former Italian PM Matteo Renzi and China’s President Xi Jinping and former US President Barack Obama. It is not clear, however, whether the committee will stick to the same list or will make some adjustments.
