Koigi says if passed, the bill will empower the DP into a dictator.

"If this bill is passed, it will make Deputy President a dictator who will be above rule of law," Koigi posted on his Facebook page on Thursday.

The Chama cha Mwanancnchi party leader further warns that the bill will allow the deputy president to have more powers than the president.

"Unless the same constitution is also changed to make Deputy President impeachable like the President and governors, William Ruto will occupy a legal position above President Uhuru who can be prosecuted through impeachment," he added.

Koigi has been in the forefront in criticising the leadership of Jubilee government under President Uhuru Kenyatta.

The bill has been introduced by Igembe South MP Mithika Linturi was published on March 24.

It seeks to change the Constitution and extend to the DP the immunity enjoyed by the Head of State.

The MP also proposes the introduction of the words “or the Deputy President” in three of the four clauses in Article 143 of the Constitution, which gives the President immunity against criminal or civil proceedings.

Also proposed is the immunity to the two from prosecution under international treaties.
