An American billionaire has made a generous contribution to a donor funded project that will see close to 26,000 poor Kenyans receive a free guaranteed salary.
eBay co-founder Pierre Omidyar launched a program, ‘GiveDirectly’, with aim to achieve the Universal Basic Income (UBI) goals.
According to a local newspaper, Omidyar is committed to giving millions of shillings to the donor, to donate millions of shilling towards the program.
With help of the money, targeted Kenyans across over 150 villages countrywide will get cash transfers, to cushion them against poverty.
‘’Those eligible will receive Sh75 per day, which is about Sh2,250 per month and equates to approximately half of what the average Kenyan earns as a monthly salary,’’ reports Kenyans.co.ke.
Also, out of the 26,000 targeted individuals, at least 6,000 will be given a long-time income running up to 12 years.
Omidyar, reportedly has Sh850 billion net worth. His ‘The Omidyar Network’ functions as both a charity and social impact investment firm.
