Bio-safety Appeals Board has cautioned consumers across the country for spreading rumours on the existence of Genetically Modified Organism (GMO) in the Kenyan market.
The board member Prof Paul Okemo termed the claims as 'just rumors propagated by people with no proof'.
“There is no legal basis about the GMO products in the market. All nations have banned GMO products. We need to be vigilant if at all they exist in some markets," Okemo said. He further refuted allegations that GMO has been the leading causative agent of cancer.
"At a times its just excessive hormones or antibiotics that causes allergy,'' he noted.
The Agriculture County Executive Committee member (CeC) Dr Moses Osia supported the GMO idea saying it was the best.
“We cannot do without science. We should be more imaginative in solving problems. We should think beyond the normal thinking and GMO is the best solution” said Osia.
They were speaking during the National Bio-safety Authority workshop at Agricultural Training Centre in Busia, Monday.
