A biochemist has asked the National Assembly to approve licensing of at least 150,000 farmers to grow bhang.

Hyaquip Inc International chief executive officer Simon Mwaura said the marijuana plant will be used in the removal of food supplements.

In a letter to the National Assembly dated September 8, Mwaura asked the lawmakers to allow for each farmer to plant one acre of bhang.

He argued thet the drug could also help boost the country’s economy 'since a kilo will go for Sh1,000'.

According to the scientist, Jomo Kenyatta University has already run tests on the extraction of food supplements from the illegal drug and has given it a clean bill of health.

“In the view of the above, I on behalf of Hyaquip request your consideration to the legalization, commercialization and growing of hemp or marijuana dry matter,” the letter reads in part as reported by the Nation.

Mwaura added that the food supplements from marijuana are nutritious and help boost the immune system.

“The government should give license to the farmers to grow the important commodity to allow many residents grappling with immune deficiencies to recover and enjoy their lives. This will also create job opportunities to our youths who will be involved in the all the processes in the farming and from my company, which will buy all the bhang,” he said.
