The plans that the coast region secedes and charts their way out as a separate state from Kenya have suffered a major setback as the dominant MRC group denounces the move as selfish and devoid of the interests of the people.

MRC has held that the leaders who publicly announced the move were seeking undue political mileage in the area out of the declaration

The group’s spokesperson Rashid Mraja has challenged the leaders to resign from their positions so as to prove they were ready to defend the secession calls for the coast region.

“Our position as MRC is that politicians are seeking political strength. When we were having a similar scheme, none of them supported us,” said Mr. Mraja.

He added that they only received backing from Nairobi governor Mike Sonko during his term as Senator and former Nominated Senator Emma Mbura who supported them in court.

Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho and his Kilifi counterpart Amason Kingi on Friday announced that they have initiated their quest for secession by seeking legal guidance locally and internationally citing what they termed as the marginalization of the coast by the government since independence.

“If they are ready to resign, then we shall support them but if they are playing 2022 politics because some of them will not contest in the next gubernatorial race, we will not support them,” added Mr. Mraja. The movement has however hinted on their intent to revive their court case to have the Coast disaffiliate itself from Kenya.
