Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua has suffered a major blow after the County Assembly rejected the five County Executive Committee (CEC) members who had been nominated and forwarded to assembly for approval.

The assembly vetting committee on Wednesday rejected the five nominees claiming that they are not qualified for the various positions they had been nominated for.

The five are Kimeu Mbithi (Public Service and ICT), Naomi MUTIE (Water), Faith Wathome (Education), Ruth Mutua (Agriculture) and Ali Maalim (Health).

In a report tabled in the assembly by Majority leader Francis Ngunga, the MCAs said that the nominees had been contested by residents in sworn affidavits on allegations of corruption, abuse of public office and incompetence.

The vetting committee in its findings noted that the nominees did not prove capacity and suitability to manage country finances and resources.

The committee also observed that the applicant’s academic qualifications and work experience did not match the portfolio used for their nomination.

“The committee was not given the criteria on how the nomination and shortlisting was done as required for under in section 8 (a) of the County Assemblies Public Appointment Act,” Mr Ngunga said.

The committee now wants governor Mutua to present fresh nominees to the assembly for vetting.

In response through his press service director Mutinda Mwanzia, Governor Mutua hit out at the assembly vetting committee claiming that it acted in bad faith and that the whole vetting process had been infiltrated by malice.
