Makali, who unsuccessfully vied for the Bungoma senatorial seat during the August 8 general elections tendered his resignation from the party on September 8.
The veteran journalist addressed his letter to the party's Secretary General Geoffrey Osotsi.
He, however, did not highlight reasons that informed his decision to withdraw his party membership.
"Being a registered and paid life member, I hereby tender my resignation as a member of ANC effective today," he said in a letter dated August 18.
Makali lost his bid to the incumbent senator Moses Wetangula, who was seeking re-election on his Ford Kenya party.
