The race for Mombasa governor has taken a new twist after a section of the Luo community denounced the recent endorsement of Senator Hassan Omar and vowed to support the incumbent, Governor Hassan Joho.
The members under the banner 'Luo Professionals' dismissed the recent group which endorsed the Senator who is vying on a Wiper Party ticket, adding that they were not party to the endorsement."We the members of the Luo community living and working in Mombasa and drawn from diverse professional backgrounds are extremely alarmed by some recent political pronouncements which in our view were very misleading, inaccurate and fundamentally at odds with our community's interests," said businessman Pius Oketch in a statement. While dismissing claims that the Luo community members had been shortchanged in county appointments, the group said that the current Mombasa county leadership has seen majority of the members from the community take big positions including County Assembly Speaker Thaddeus Rajwayi. The group added that they are firmly supporting Joho's re-election bid and that their interests as a community are best served by Governor Joho. They vowed to campaign for Joho and ensure he retains his seat.Oketch was accompanied by Mombasa-based Lawyer Katete and Activist Michael Magak.
