Outgoing cabinet secretaries whose terms are not renewed will miss out on certain entitlements: they will not be accorded retirement benefits if an amendment to the pensions law succeeds in parliament.

The amendment will make it mandatory for the cabinet secretaries to serve for a decade to be eligible for retirement benefits.

Civil servants employed on permanent and pensionable terms will also be affected by the amendment.

President Uhuru Kenyatta is set to unveil his cabinet structure which means that those who will not be retained will not enjoy retirement benefits.

The National Assembly has already sent a notice to the public inviting them to make contributions to the amendments to the pension laws.

''Where an officer has completed five years of pensionable service, the benefits accrued to the officer under this act shall vest in that officer and shall become payable.'' The Pensions Act reads.

If the amendment passes it will be a big blow to those who will suffer the misfortune of not being retained.
