Despite his resilience to thwart referendum calls being championed by Raila Odinga, DP William Ruto will now have to first handle his unsettled Rift Valley backyard.
So divisive the calls have been that Ruto has openly rebuked Raila of plotting to shortchange him by pushing for a parliamentary system of government.
"Some people are out to push for constitutional changes just to have seats in government. That is unacceptable and we shall not entertain it," he said.
At a meeting in Naivasha on Tuesday, Raila insisted that change of the country's governance structure was inevitable, remarks which irked Ruto's allies.
Uasin Gishu senator Margaret Kamar and Moiben MP Silas Tiren now want Kenyans to be allowed to make a decision on the matter.
"You can go around condemning the referendum but it is an issue the people will make a decision. You should not fear just let Kenyans decide," said Tiren.
On her part, Kamar said: "This is about the people. Politicians can make noise but when the issue is subjected to people, they will decide on the ballot."
Understandably, Raila is reportedly pushing for the introduction of a powerful PM post that would be accompanied by a reduction of presidential powers.
While Tiren is a close confidant of Gideon Moi, Kamar was at a time a trusted lieutenant of Raila Odinga.
