Speaking on Wednesday, Commission for University Education (CUE) Chief Executive Officer David Some revealed that those enrolled in the programmes usually graduate without meeting the required threshold of learning hours.

"We are going to close down all these programmes because students do not complete the mandatory hours for an academic programme and this is affecting the quality of education," said Prof Some.

Some said that the normal semester period for any course ran for 13 weeks yet the Education school-based programme had the teachers learning only during holidays which totalled to only eight weeks a year.

The discontinuation of these programmes will be a big blow to teachers who rely on holidays to further their education since their salaries and savings did not put a majority of them in better positions to take study leave.
