Teachers will no longer be promoted based on the academic qualifications they have acquired from higher learning institutions.
The Teachers Service Commissioner (TSC) Chief Executive, Nancy Macharia has hinted that teachers will only be promoted based on the performance merit.
“You will be paid for your job worthiness and nothing else,” said Macharia
Speaking to the National Assembly’s Education and Research Committee, Macharia said that under the new arrangement, no teacher will be promoted based on academic qualifications.
.“We carried out a job evaluation with the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) and agreed that promotion is based on work done,” noted Macharia.
The TSC boss also issued a warning to underperforming head-teachers and principals noting that they would be sacked if they do not meet their targets.
This is contrary to a past practice where underperforming principals were demoted.
“Under the new arrangement, we are no longer redeploying school heads, in a case where one fails to deliver, you just exit the service and nothing else,” said Macharia.
Most teachers have been investing their money and other saving in further studies hoping to land a promotion, after the TSC’s prior requirement, which stated that primary head teachers and their deputies should possess a first degree in education, while the secondary schools' heads to have at least, a master’s degree.
