A group of residents from Nyamache sub-county in Kisii have challenged Kenya Rural Roads Authority (Kerra) to surrender some feeder roads it is supervising in the region due to alleged incompetence.
Speaking to HiviSasa.com on Tuesday, they accused the authority of deliberately delaying completion of essential feeder roads in the area, rendering them impassable during this rainy season.
They asked the county government to pile pressure on the national government to have class C roads devolved to the counties since they have satisfied their readiness to assume the duties.
“We are asking Kerra to do us justice by handing their mandate to the county government. They have deliberately delayed to complete some feeder roads such as Rigena-Nyangusu, making them impossible for traffic this rainy season,” said Antony Nyang’au.
“Officers from Kerra are very incompetent hence should just surrender the duty to county government since it has demonstrated its ability to improve such roads. We also urge counties to continue pressuring the national government to devolve class B and C of roads," added Enock Bosire.
However, resident engineer Kepha Nyaundi dismissed the claims and blamed the ongoing rains as the main reasoning why Kerra suspended construction of the road temporarily.
“I know what they are going through but that isn’t a justification for them to condemn us. We halted the process till rains subsidise because it is quite cumbersome to construct during this season,” Nyaundi said.
