The government has extended the term of the Tana River Water Services Board by six months to ensure it manages the troubled Kirinyaga Water and Sanitation Company.

Water Services Regulatory Board chief executive officer Robert Gakubia said the Tana River Board will be in charge of the local firm's operations and supplies up to March 2, 2018.

The management board of the troubled water firm was dissolved in April on claims of gross mismanagement of resources.

Tana River has been facing water shortage due to the prolonged drought in the region.

Residents in the county are forced to walk long distances in search of water as herders have fled their homes to far areas in search of the commodity and good pasture for their livestock after drought left the region dry.
