A group of youths from Bobaracho in Kisii County have formed a club whose main mandate will be to encourage tree planting exercise in the county.
Speaking on Tuesday at Bobaracho primary school, the group chairperson Wilkister Onsomu said that there is need guard environment.
“The main reason why we have launched the club, ‘Mazingira Bora’ is to save our forest from the rampant environmental degradation,” said Onsomu.
She said tree cutting activities in the region were increasing despite constant warnings from various government authorities.
“Many environmental officers from both the county and national governments have been here pleading with us not to cut down trees but many of us has not paid attention to their advice,” said Onsomu.
Onsomu said the club will be conducting tree planting activities, every fortnight in selected areas and civic education on environmental sustainability to area residents once per month.
“It will not be easy but we will be planting trees every two weeks before educating our people on benefits of maintaining our environment by safeguarding our trees that are source of water,” she added.
She urged both government and non-governmental organisation to join hand with them in order to make a difference in the area.
“If we get support from the county government, am sure we will have a major impact. Therefore, we urge the county government to support us,” added Onsoum.
