Boda boda operators in Mavoko Sub County have been told to join groups and give identification numbers of their motorbikes apart from number plates to curb crime.
Addressing the press in Athi River town on Thursday, Derick Nyaga, Athi River Base Commander said this would make it easier to monitor and identify bad elements among the operators in a bid to improve security.
Nyaga said road accidents were major concerns within the area and therefore his office had embarked on initiatives of lecturing, training and sensitizing boda boda operators on how they can ensure safety while on the roads.
He said major victims according to statistics include pedestrians, boda boda riders and their passengers.
The officer urged operators to follow road safety measures such as wearing protective gear including helmets, reflector jackets and obtaining valid driving licenses.
Nyaga said all those engaged in bodaboda business must adhere to highway regulations to eliminate accidents on roads.
He warned the traders against conducting their businesses past the stipulated hours asserting that all must stop operating by 11PM as stipulated in the law.
The officer lamented that drunk driving among the bodaboda operators was a major challenge leading to road accidents.
Nyaga said police will take stern action against those found consuming alcohol and other drugs while operating bodaboda.
He said his office is committed to ensuring that the Sub County becomes a model as far as maintaining law and order is concerned and minimizing road accidents.
