A bodaboda operator in Thika Town died on Thursday morning while his passenger is in hospital after they were hit by a speeding matatu along Munyu Road.
According to an eyewitness, Jane Mumbi, the deceased was on the wrong of the road as he joined the Gatitu Junction Road without considering oncoming vehicles from Garissa Road.
Munyu Road is currently overwhelmed by traffic congestion due to the ongoing road works and accidents have increased along the road.
She added that when the rider joined the road from a pavement, the matatu hit the motorcycle on the front. He added that the bodaboda operator died instantly.
The passenger, however, was slightly hit and he was dragged with the motorbike wreckage, breaking his arms and legs. He is admitted at Thika Nursing Home.
Confirming the incident at the scene, Thika deputy traffic base commander John Lisoi said that the bodaboda operator was ignorant of road safety measures.
The matatu that hit the bike allegedly sped off and the police are pursuing it.
“Such lives being lost are unfortunate. The deaths could be avoided if road users observed safety measures while using the road,” said Lisoi.
Lisoi, however, warned passengers of using bodabodas without protective gears such as helmets.
The body of the deceased was taken to the General Kago Funeral Home.
