The Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA) has shown concern over the low turnout and uptake of insurance cover by the operators.

Speaking during a function in Kisumu on Monday, IRA Finance Manager Edward Opiayo said that the low uptake was alarming despite the fact that some policies go for as low as 100 shillings per month.

“NHIF goes for as low as 100 shillings per month. Operators are not protecting themselves and their passengers in case of an accident,” he said.

He added that this situation was brought about by the lack of knowledge about insurance policies among the public. He urged the county government to work with insurance companies to ensure that every citizen is covered by an insurance policy.

Speaking at the same time, Kisumu Bodaboda chairman Nelson Odire said that the low turnout was due to lack of insurance policies that covers them.

“Bodaboda riders do not take insurance policies because there is none that covers our needs. Previously, Amaco insurance used to cover us but they left due to lack of licenses by the riders,” he said.

He added that the riders should first be educated on the importance of having licenses before seeking an insurance cover.
