Thika Traffic Base Commander Benjamin Kiprono and the new Makongeni OCS Samuel Khisa have warned Bodaboda operators in Thika East sub-county and the surrounding area against carrying excess passengers, especially pupils going to or coming from school.
The two said that a number of Bodaboda operators have a tendency of carrying between two to four pupils on one motorbike to and from school which is against traffic rules and regulations.
Addressing those operators in the area on Thursday, Kiprono told them that they must adhere to the laid down traffic rules and should only carry one pupil per motorbike adding that they are also supposed to use their designated paths.
“When many pupils are carried on one motorbike, their lives are endangered. The parents blame us for the accidents yet you people are the cause of these problems,” said Kiprono.
He said the operators should be well trained to be able to observe traffic rules promptly adding that they will conduct a crackdown of the same to ensure that those operators have a license.
He added that a number of motorbike accidents within the region are caused by carelessness, adding that most of the operators are not keenly observing traffic rules.
“We have to safeguard the lives of our school going children who are being transported as passengers on motor bikes and I urge parents and teachers to be on the lookout for such Bodaboda operators who carry more than one pupil on their motorbike,” said OCS Khisa who was being introduced to the area residents.
